RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti - Graphics Cards Discontinued
Share
In a surprising turn of events, NVIDIA has decided to stop manufacturing the RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti graphics cards in favor of launching new \"Super\" versions. This decision comes amidst growing dissatisfaction from users over the high prices of the original cards and what seemed to be an unbalanced performance-to-cost offering.
The Fall of the RTX 4080 and 4070 Ti
The RTX 4080 card was launched at the end of 2022 in two versions: one with 16GB of memory and the other with 12GB. This caused confusion among gaming enthusiasts. NVIDIA eventually withdrew the 12GB version and re-released it as the RTX 4070 Ti, while keeping the 16GB version under the RTX 4080 name. However, both cards did not gain the expected popularity, mainly due to the general perception that their prices were too high for the offered performance.
The Super Revamp
According to a report from a German website, later confirmed by NVIDIA, both the RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti will be discontinued to make way for new, improved Super editions.
The Short Lifespan of the Cards
The RTX 4080 was on the market for just over a year, while the RTX 4070 Ti lasted only one year, making it one of the shortest-lived cards in recent memory. The original price for the RTX 4080 12GB card, which later became the RTX 4070 Ti, was set at $899, causing considerable frustration among gamers due to its specs not meeting expectations. Despite a $100 price reduction in January 2023, sales did not meet forecasts.
High Price, Low Popularity
The RTX 4080 also faced a similar fate, with its price being $500 higher than the RTX 3080 FE, despite having a narrower memory bus (256-bit vs. 320-bit) and a price close to the much stronger RTX 4090 card. Both the RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti remained on the market at their suggested retail price for several months after their release, indicating they did not achieve the expected popularity.
The \"Super\" Solution
Instead of announcing price cuts for the two graphics cards, NVIDIA opted to launch the new, improved Super versions. The RTX 4080 Super now boasts a $200 price drop, priced at $999. Meanwhile, the RTX 4070 Ti Super has received significant improvements in specs, including more cores and memory, but the price remains the same at $799. This could present an attractive deal, particularly if the performance is close to that of the discontinued RTX 4080.
